More & Forever Interview Series — Episode 13
jEFF MUNN
My final guest for Season One is Jeff Munn—my friend and former colleague at Hewitt Associates. Jeff and I connected last year, after a big gap of not seeing each other, and it was as if we just took a breath in a conversation and started right back up again. Jeff’s presence—literally, he is a certified Presence-Based Coach—puts a simple, yet profound, bow around Season One. This is less an interview and more an informal coaching session I am sharing with you all—thank you, Jeff!
THEMES
Our experience is 100% internally generated all of the time
Our thinking always changes—you don’t have to do anything to your thinking to change it, it changes.
Listen and be there. Being present to the person next to you, and reacting based on what you hear, see or feel from them, is much more powerful than anything you prepare.
Embrace whatever is showing up
You get more and forever relationships by having relationships
Things are simpler than what we make them
We are creating our own experience of the world
KEY MOMENTS
[1:07] A little bit about Jeff’s enduring career—from a stressed-out overachiever to a certified Presence-Based Coach.
[8:20] Jeff’s presence-based philosophy; the ongoing narrative in our head and our experience of the world.
[12:43] Cutting through all the noise in our heads. It is simple and powerful.
[14:13] Jeff coaches me! “It makes it sound like a thing…but it is not really a thing!”
[15:25] Most of the time we are just here figuring it out.
[15:44] Putting this philosophy in the context of a sales conversation . . . I have goals as a salesperson. I need to (fill in the blank), but you don’t get more and forever relationships doing any of that. You get more and forever relationships by having relationships.
[16:47]“Listen and be there.” Creating and inspiring trust.
[18:06] Establishing more executive presence, "We can either be present or we can do things to get in the way of being present.”
[23:41] Asking questions: getting out of our own way to “sometimes the most obvious questions are the best questions to ask.”
[25:17] Where do you get some of your inspiration?
[29:31] Working with CEOs transitioning from a successful business transaction to . . . where?
[32:18] Recognize that happiness is internal and is always available—what will I create?
[33:30] We all create. That’s all we do. “We are creating our own experience of the world 24/7.”
[36:28] What do you do that makes you feel physically healthy? “I ask: Will this make me feel better?”
[40:08] Trish creates her own coaching session with Jeff in the moment…thank you Jeff 😊
[45:09] We get to say, what do I want to do?
[47:06] My favorite, and final, nugget: “How easy are we willing to let life be?”
